David and Kathryn Moore have owned Pine Valley Ranch since 2000. They have seen to the development of the commercial cow-calf operation and expansion of the ranch property. In the twenty plus years they have spent in Pine Valley, they have also started, purchased and grown a few other businesses in the Halfway area. Pine Valley Ranch remains the first and the core of their Oregon based operations.
Historically, Pine Valley Ranch was owned by the McCall Oil Family. In the mid 1900's, the McCall's started buying up smaller homesteads in Pine Valley and joined them together. In the late 1970's the Torrance's bought the ranch. They continued raising a smaller mixed herd of cows and enjoyed watching the growth life cycle of the cattle. Both Torrance's were in their late 80's when they sold Pine Valley Ranch to the Moore's. They maintained that it added 20 years to their lives just living on the ranch. The Moore's hoped it would do the same for them.
When the Moore's bought Pine Valley Ranch all of the land and physical property was located in Pine Valley. The ranch was tired and the infrastructure had not had adequate capitol investments for several years. David, being a retired Army colonel, quickly evaluated the situation and developed a long term plan for sustained operations. Both the Moore's have MBA's and extensive business backgrounds. and it was clear that the business side of the cattle operation needed immediate attention. New management was recruited, genetics were changed to Black Angus and physical expansion of the ranch was aggressively pursued in Eagle and Pine Valley's. Pine Valley Ranch has been expanded an additional 10,000 acres and the cattle herd developed and grew along with it.
The crew at Pine Valley Ranch has been key to its success over the years and the current leadership, with Dean Tucker as the Ranch Manager, is no exception to that. There is no easy formula to a successful ranching operation. It takes everything - dedication to constant improvement, hard work, long days in good weather and bad, a love for what you do or it wouldn't make any sense to keep at it, financial resources to be able to invest when and where it's necessary, market trends that favor the producer and the ability to ride it out when it doesn't.
Pine Valley Ranch continues to be an industry leader in the Pacific Northwest and the cattle get the attention of worldwide buyers. The physical beauty of the ranch and wildness of the area is unmatched - it's referred to as the Wilder Side of Oregon. This is where Pine Valley Ranch's commercial cattle herd is raised and the beef performance traits continue to develop.
